Basement Remodeling: Preparing the Basement Walls for Painting

Preparation has been often hailed as the overall key to success when it comes to all types of different projects. Painting is no exception. If you have been considering remodeling your basement, you probably will want to start with a project that is simple, cost-effective, and easy to see the results from. Well, there is nothing more appropriate to meet all of these needs than throwing on a new coat of paint. However, seeing that the entire house sits on the basement, the walls often experience a lot of wear and tear. This is why it is important to take the time to properly prepare the basement walls for painting. In this area, it is often necessary to do a little bit more than just scrubbing down the walls to make sure the surface is clean. In this guide, you will learn a few essential strategies to basement wall preparation.

1. One of the first things that you will want to do is take the time to examine the walls from top to bottom, side to side in the basement. You will want to look for areas that are chipped, cracked, and exhibit any form of damage. It is imperative that you perform this step prior to painting because any damage should be repaired prior to painting. If the damage is not repaired, not only will it reduce the appearance of the paint job that you will perform, but it can also lead to more serious complications that may result in more expensive repairs later on down the road. If you find any cracks, chips, etc…it is important to purchase either wall compound or caulking and repair the area as per the instructions listed on the labeling of these products.

2. While you are waiting on the caulking and/or wood compound to dry that you have used to repair your basement walls, it is time to evaluate the putty and moldings throughout the room. These are generally located on and/or near doors, windows, and similar structures. If you find that any molding needs replaced, you should go ahead and take care of this. If you discover that some of the putty that surrounds the doors, windows, etc is chipped and/or cracking, you should go ahead and replace this. It is important to do this so that the paint job is even and the quality of the paint job is consistent throughout the entire room.

3. Now, we move on to the actual cleansing of the basement walls. Now, if you have had to use putty or caulking, it is important to ensure that these substances have completely dried prior to starting the cleansing process. If you find that everything is dry, it is time to scrub down! The easiest way that you can do this is to take a durable sander and go over each and every single wall. This will ensure that all of the paint is removed from previous work, and that tough grime and grit are completely eliminated.

4. Next, you should go over your work to ensure that all of the areas on the wall are smooth, sturdy, and clean. Once you have confirmed this, it is time to clean up your work area. You will want to ensure that all paint chips, wood chips, and dust that has been gathered in the room is completed eliminated prior to painting your basement walls. You can use a basic broom and dustpan to start with, and then move on to an industrial strength vacuum cleaner. It is important to ensure that you take your time in this step. Even the smallest amount of dust can cause some big problems if it gets mixed in your paint as you cover your walls.

5. The last step in preparing for your basement remodeling paint job is to gather all the supplies that will be needed to paint your room. This includes paint guns, paints, paint brushes, paint remover, and similar items. It is also extremely important to ensure that you do not fail to gather all of the necessary safety equipment that you will need to protect yourself and others in the home.

Once you have gathered all of the necessary supplies, and performed the above mentioned steps, your basement walls are fully prepared for painting!
